Operation History
Brannan & Reinhardt Polled Herefords began operation in 1947 as a continuation of the Les Brannan Polled Hereford herd which began in 1928. It is currently owned and operated by the Kent Reinhardt family which consists of Kent and Pat Reinhardt; son Derek Reinhardt and his family: wife Jennifer, son Landon, daughters Alexa and Izabella; daughter Allison Gradig and her family: husband Larry, daughter Kylee, son Bevan, daughter Lillian and son Tyler; and son Nelson L. Reinhardt.
Allison and Larry live with their family at the headquarters north of Bison. Derek and his family live in Ness City and Nelson lives north of Galatia, Kansas. Kent and Pat live in Otis.
The operation started to grow after Kent’s return from active duty in 1972. At that time it was headquartered in Decatur County (Oberlin, KS) where Kent was the county ag agent. It continued its’ operation there until 1990 when it moved back to the Bison area with headquarters west of Victoria, KS.
The headquarters was moved to Bison in 1997.

A major purchase of females was made in 1977-78 from Dwight Williams of cows he had purchased as heifers from Bob Smith and Floyd Coen. Derek’s children have purchased bred heifers from Schutte & Sons, Guide Rock, NE. The herd has been closed since 2014. The herd has been enrolled in the Whole Herd TPR program since the program’s start and all producing females are in the DNA program. The herd consists of 70 bred females calving 40 in the spring and 30 in the fall. AI is used extensively in both spring(40% of the cows) and fall(40%).
The base herd traces to BAR JZ TRADITION 434V and a son we raised in the mid 1990’s. We shared our 434V son with Floyd Coen while he was still in business. At the present our herd consists of granddaughters and great daughters of SHF Vision R117 U38 and EFBEEF U208 Surebet Z002.
We are using Behm 100W Cuda 504C, SHF Gin Runny B716 G088 and ILR RED POWER 456B as AI bulls.
In the spring of 2020 we purchased 2 herd sires from Sandhill Farms:
SHF Galvanized D256 G331 ET: a son of SHF Drumline 001A D256 out of a SHF York 19H Y02 daughter.
SHF Gauntlet B413 G085: a son of EFBEEF BR Validated B413 out of a SHF Mutual daughter X36 Z67 daughter.
Both bulls’ have helped add desirable effects on improving EPD scores throughout the herd. The cross between Sandhill Farms genetics and B & R genetics are showing a promising bloodline being created with hopes of continued improvement in the years to come.
Our base customers are commercial cattlemen with nearly 95% of the bulls we sell going out on Angus cows. We rarely keep bull calves with birth weights over 90# and 95# being a firm cutoff point. We do have several bull customers that will use a 90-95# birth weight bull on their older cows.
We feed our steers out as locker beef for local customers. In the last 3 years, we have seen a growth in interest in yearling heifers for commercial replacements.
